Three-day weekend
1. If we take a three day weekend, there is lower productivity at work.
- If we have a three day weekend, we get more rest and have more energy to work harder during the week.
- Companies will lose one day of production, so they will have fewer products to sell and make money.
- Companies could still stay open 5 days a week, but they would switch their workers so that the workers only work 4 days per week. Like Tom works Monday through Thursday, but Brenda works Tuesday through Friday.
- The companies will have to hire more workers to fill all the shifts. This will increase costs for the company, and cause them to raise their prices. This will cause the price of their products to go up, and customers will stop buying them.
2. Work-life balance is very important. People need to spend a fair amount of free time outside of work to keep their mental health in good condition. Three day weekends will contribute to that.
- They have two days plus five nights to spend them however they like. So, I think they already have enough rest. People like me can wake up three hours before work and have free time, so in that case they would have the two days plus five nights and five mornings, and even lunch breaks.
- There is a difference between having some free hours during the day, and having a whole day off with no pressure or work to worry about. Even if you have a few hours of free time, you might still be worried about the work you must do that day. It is better to have a whole day to unplug from your worries.
- Correct, but will this idea affect the companies and the company’s reputation and they may lose many customers. It will cause a big fall in the global market.
- Rather, many people might be impressed that the company wants to take care of its workers’ mental health and it could have a good reputation. For example, people want to buy products from companies that are fair and kind to their employees.
- There are many people that are selfish and only care about themselves and they can destroy the company’s reputation. So, it can close many companies.
3. Let’s see the worker’s view: First he will be happy that he got three days off, then he will start to worry about his salary, because it will have decreased. Additionally, companies will offer their employees insurance, but this is not required by law. If he doesn’t have that insurance, he might not be able to afford the things he needs when he gets sick, or a family members gets sick.
- The point of the three day weekend isn’t to change people’s salaries. People should receive the same salary, and be as productive as they would be during a 5 day week. So, ideally, there would be no reduction in salary.
- It is unlikely that businesses will be as productive in 4 days as they would be in 5 days. This will result in higher costs, then higher prices and eventually lost customers. The work may also lose quality if they try to keep a high pace.
